a2 For some, May Day is kind of an innocent spring neo-fertility rite.

In grade school the nuns used to set up a May Pole, and have us make little flower baskets, which we would leave on the doorsteps of neighbors, ring the door and then scurry away.

lawyer But in the United States the day is usually pretty much ignored (even though as a socialist celebration it was invented in the USA) except for the excruciatingly boring Law Day “festivities” held in courtrooms around the nation. Eisenhower started the very lame tradition of lawyers being even more windy and dull than usual, as an anti-May Day protest of godless communism. It was this sort of thing that convinced the world for a long time that monolithic communism would prevail

may day For many years the grand daddy of May Day cerebrations was held in Moscow. Rows and rows of Soviet soldiers goose stepped through Red Square behind massive tanks, overseen by the ranking old buzzards of the Politburo, while millions of onlookers obediently cheered.

may day After the Soviet Union liberated Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden cheerfully plowed his field as the happy workers celebrated May Day.

may day Of course, they still do May Day in Havana. The workers used to have mixed feelings about May Day. They got the day off, but had to endure seven hours of Fidel's non-stop blathering.

may day And in Europe the Socialists still parade in support of the workers of the world and dialectic materialism.

May Day But this does give me an aesthetic excuse to share this collaboration of Bikini Kill with the Maoist International, in a rendition of Rebel Girl. The politics are totally fucked up, but the video is both weird and adorable:

may day In America, some of the wonks on the left often try to make something of the day, and in the process annoy many people, even some who, like me, may actually be sympathetic to one or two of their causes.

I guess the immigrant rights groups are going to parade through LA again, and the cops are going to try not to make a scene by cracking their heads this time.

I don't really understand what these people are protesting. If it is the vitriolic racism and hate that the national debate has engendered, then I am with them—but it's counterproductive. If they are trying to draw attention to the inaction of Congress on the issue, I am sympathetic—but welcome to America.

may day It just seems pointless, and I fail to see how it has anything to do with the International Workers Day. The most ardent supporters of a rational and humane resolution of the issue are libertarians, country club Republicans, corporate interests, landscapers, Mexican restaurants and the Catholic Church—and I suppose some shameless vote pandering Democrats.

may day But the communists are still masterful opportunists, and able to take advantage of situations like this.

On the Left Coast the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, in protest of the Iraq War, is planning an eight hour work slowdown—as if anyone will notice.

FEMAThe socialists are alarmed that FEMA is planning some exercises on May 1. They are convinced it is an attempt to intimidate the populace from taking to the streets. Whenever the revolutionary pot is about to boil over, the government always turns to that highly efficient outfit.

may day In Seattle they are expecting thousands of modern day Birkenstock and flannel hippies, hyped up on Starbucks coffee, to hit the streets. Like any good hippie protest there will be a wide range of signs, usually homemade, each of which features some wry slogan of the individual protester's making. They will disrupt traffic. And this will convince many harried commuters of the righteousness of their cause.

However, if there are any protests like this, count me in:

tyra burns bra

revolution Seattle's Revolution Bookstore has breathlessly announced that on May Day they will be releasing a pamphlet entitled Revolution and Communism: A Foundation and Strategic Orientation. Not only that, but there is a bonus essay: Some Crucial Points of Revolutionary Orientation—in Opposition to Infantile Posturing and Distortions of Revolution.

sexpresso I wonder how many shots of espresso it takes to get through that one.

But I'm not gonna find out.

Just give me the barista.

P.S.--

RIP DC Madam Today, the DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, committed suicide at her Mom's home in Florida. A couple weeks ago the Justice Department convicted her of a slew of charges, including racketeering, in the first time the full brunt of federal laws were used to bear down on the victimless crime of prostitution. I hope they are satisfied that justice was done.

vitter diaperWhile she was facing fifty years in a federal penitentiary, her customer, the ever upright diaper afficiando, Senator David Vitter, after disgustingly embarrassing his wife in public, continues to prance around Congress as a living testimonial to the hypocrisy of that wing of the Republican Party which is constantly lecturing us on morality and family values.

Oh my gawd--whats that smell?

RIP Deborah Jeane Palfrey

**THIS VIDEO IS A MUST WATCH! **
Watch it to the very end.

When you're done, google for images of Cynthia McKinney and see the racist, sexist hateful images that have been made of this sister. It was a very public, political lynching.
However, she is not skulking off into the shadows, she is fighting back.

Post your thoughts in the comments section.

What is normally a day of celebration is also, coincendentally, the day of the Danish Cup Final. Today Brøndby and Esbjerg battled it out in the National Stadium, Parken. Since we don't fancy either team, we have no idea who won.
But here's a bit of football cycle chic and a fine demonstration of how to transport one's self to a football match featuring a decent team - F.C. Copenhagen:

Chicago Cycle Chic from Hankandme.blogspot.com
We haven't heard much from Chicago from readers of the blog until today. Two great emails pop into the Cycle Chic inbox from The Third City. Both with clear an undeniable links to Copenhagen Cycle Chic.

First up, the coolest current gig in the Americas. HANK & ME is a blog about a Chicagoen and her bike, Hank. Here's her pitch from the blog:
This is the story of Hank & me. Hank is my oma bicycle make by henry workcycles. Inspired by Cycle Chic and Copenhagenize, we're going Dutch for 365 days in the city of Chicago. That's right - no car, no spandex, no toe clips. Just my everyday clothes, a bike, a lock, and a set of panniers. Can we make it the year? Hank and I think so.

Of course you'll make it! Because you're cool and Hank is cool and because 100 million Europeans do the same thing each day! :-) THIS is the kind of role model America needs in order to normalize everyday urban cycling.

We quickly suggested that she take Hank along to Erik & Me, a Danish restaurant and pub in Chicago as well as Wikstrom's Scandinavian-American Gourmet Foods to buy some Danish bread, cheese and herring and the all-important snaps [I think it's spelled schnaps 'over there']

GO chicaGO!
The other Windy City email is a fabulous guest photo from Kimberly:
Chicago Cycle Chic
Now THAT is cycle chic at it's best. THAT is a Friday night in Copenhagen. Classy and chic and a cooler than cool bike to boot. The undeniable link to Copenhagen Cycle Chic is that Kimberly runs the very bespoke Indigo Yacht Charters and among their destinations are the Virgin Islands - part of which was formally owned by Denmark until sold to the USA in 1917 for $25,000,000.

Thanks to you both for thinking of us! Any more photos? You know where to send them.
